waze

Waze

An alternative to Google Maps (ironically, owned by Google). Waze is a GPS navigation app for your smartphone that, in addition to the regular maps and turn-by-turn navigation instructions, features user-submitted travel times and route details.

Uber

Uber

In many countries, Uber is the best way to get from the airport to your hotel both from a safety standpoint and from a cost-saving perspective. Ideally, before you arrive, look up (1) whether Uber operates in the country and (2) whether there are tensions with the taxi drivers (e.g., Argentina). As a general rule of thumb, in these countries where there are tensions with the taxi drivers, be discreet. The Uber driver is likely to ask you to sit in the passenger seat in those cases, to make it less obvious you’re taking an Uber. Also, airports generally have Uber-designated pick-up places that are in a different spot from the taxi stand. Be sure to look for instructions in the Uber app as to where the Uber driver is picking you up.

Lyft

Lyft

An alternative to Uber. You can get cheaper rates here at times.

Grab

Grab

Grab is an app similar to Uber but based in Singapore and operates primarily in Asia. In March 2018, Grab acquired Uber’s Southeast Asian operations.

Go-Jek
